Soils
Know your soil type before planting. Most soils contain some mix of clay, sand, and silt. Too much of one component will create problems for the future health of your shrub or tree unless modified.
A rough test includes thorough mixing of 1 part of your soil with 4 parts of water in a clean glass jar. Allow this mixture to settle overnight. The larger particles (sand) will settle to the bottom first, the smallest particles (clay) will settle last – in the morning. You should see two different layers. If the mix is heavy in either of these two components, soil amendment is needed. We can then help you identify soil type.
Tree Planting Preparation
When you're planting a shrub or a tree, the hole should be twice the diameter of the rootball but deep enough only to allow the top of the rootball to remain at ground level. In almost all cases, avoid loosening the soil below this point so settling does not occur after you water in the shrub.
